In recent years, more and more South Korean people come to live in Yantai and many of them consider Yantai as their second home. To meet their needs, lots of Korean educational and medical facilities have been built in Yantai. On September 17, the media delegation of the “Shandong Goes Ahead in the China-South Korea FTA” coverage activity visited Yantai South Korea School, the sole school in Yantai that issues the certificate recognized by South Korean government.

There were only 35 students when the school was founded in 2001. Now, the school consists of three educational departments, namely, the primary school, junior high school and high school with 28 classes and 675 students.

The South Korea School covers an area of over 37220 square meters. The teaching buildings, sports ground, canteens and dormitories are all equipped with high-standard modern teaching facilities and every classroom is equipped with computers, LCD televisions and projectors, achieving the network teaching.

According to Yoon Yong Jae, the fifth headmaster of the school, Yantai South Korea School is so far the sole South Korea school in Shandong province approved by both the Chinese and South Korean governments, and also the only school completely invested by South Korean capital. Only the children of the South Korean people are admitted to the school. The increase of the number of its students indicates more and more South Korean enterprises come to invest in Yantai.

Statistics provided by Yantai Municipal Commercial Affairs Bureau show that by the end of 2014, a total of 3551 projects were invested by Korean enterprises with a contract capital of 11.01 billion dollars and an actual use of 5.3 billion dollars. About 50 thousand South Korean people live and work in Yantai. The South Korean restaurants, supermarkets and beauty salons can be seen all over the streets, which not only benefit the South Korean people living in Yantai but also the local residents.

Yantai South Korea School adopts the South Korean educational mode. It uses the same textbooks as those in South Korea and most of the teachers here are from South Korea. The difference is Yantai South Korea School strengthens the education of Chinese and English. “The Chinese course is taught by Chinese professors and English is taught by both South Korean people and those from English-speaking countries such as the USA, Canada and Australia,” said Yoon Yong Jae.

The school has attached high attention to the education of traditional Chinese culture. Courses such as Chinese culture and Chinese history are taught in the primary school, making the students experience Chinese costume, food and traditional art.

“The trades between China and South Korea will be more dynamic due to the signing of the China-South Korea FTA. And more and more South Korean people will come to work in Yantai, therefore, there will be more South Korean students to study in our school,” said Yoon Yong Jae.

The South Korea School not only educates the South Korean children living in Yantai with their parents, but also promotes the cultural exchange between China and South Korea. The cooperation and communication between Yantai and South Korea has expanded to fields of education, health care, culture, sport industry and media from the traditional fields of trade and tourism.
