A signing ceremony to mark the construction of the Yantai Sino-South Korean Industrial Park in China's Shandong province took place in Seoul, South Korea, on June 1.

During the ceremony, Meng Fanli, the mayor of Yantai, noted that the Sino-South Korean industrial park plays a strategic role in backing the country's Belt and Road Initiative – put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, comprising of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

Meng also expressed his hope to build Yantai into a hot spot for South Korean investment.

The park will focus on the emerging industries of high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy, energy conservation and environmental protection, electronic information, maritime engineering. It will also engage in service industries such as logistics, e-commerce, cultural innovation, health preservation, trade and commerce, and finance and insurance.

The construction of the park is expected to usher in a new phase of development in Sino-South Korean cooperation, both in terms of business, maritime transport and tourism.

Yantai is a coastal city in northeastern Shandong province and was identified as a suitable location to house a sister industrial park between China and South Korea, thanks to proximity to South Korea and convenient transportation networks.

Situated on the Shandong Peninsula, south of the Bohai Bay, and parallel to the southern tip of South Korea, Yantai is a key city of the Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. The city is a one-hour flight from Seoul and a one and a half hour train ride to both Beijing and Shanghai. The city benefits from close exchanges with South Korea and 124 flights and 13 ferries travel between Yantai and South Korea every week.

The newly-launched Qingdao-Rongcheng high-speed railway and Penglai International Airport had dramatically improved Yantai's transport network, adding to its lure as the location for the industrial park.
