Hometown of Confucius Shandong China

  By now a tourism structure consisting of several distinctive lines and areas is taking shape in the province: tourism line formed by Baotu Spring, Mount Taishan, and the Sage’s (Confucius and Mencius) birthplace located in Jinan, Tai’an, Qufu and Zoucheng from north to south; beach area connected with Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai; folk customs tourism area featuring kite, Yangjiabu woodcut spring paintings and folk customs round Weifang city; Ancient Qi Kingdom culture area featuring Ancient Qi city, pit of sacrificial horses and the old residence of Pu Songling in Zibo; the Yellow Riverestuary tourism zone characterized with the wonder of the river pouring into the sea and its primitive natural scenes; Shuihu Legends tourist region featuring stories of the classical novel “Outlaws of the Marsh” mainly in Liangshan county and Yanggu county.

  Each year, there are many major tourism events to be staged: Weifang International Kite Festival and Zibo International Ceramics Exhibition in April; China International Household Electrical Appliances Exposition in June; Qingdao International Beer Festival in August; Qufu International Confucius Cultural Festival and Mount Taishan International Climbing Festival in September and some other tourism fairs. In 2010, Shandong received 350 million tourist arrivals including 3.668 million inbound ones. Last year the total turnover of the tourism industry reached 305.88 billion RMB yuan with 2.16 billion US dollars from inbound tourists. There are 458 A-level tourist scenic spots and 23 provincial level tourist holiday resorts.

  Mount Taishan

  Mount Taishan is the most worshipped one among the five holy mountains in China. It is the country’s famous scenic spot because of its majesty and splendor and has been listed by UNESCO as both the World Natural Heritage and the World Cultural Heritage. Mount Taishan had been the place for emperors to pay homage to heaven ever since the Spring and Autumn Period (722BC~221BC).

  Qufu

  Qufu is the birthplace of Confucius, the great ancient Chinese philosopher and educator. It is one of the 24 famous Historical and Cultural Cities earliest named by the State Council. There are 112 places of cultural relics with special protection, including 4 designated by the state and 12 by the province. In 1994, UNESCO listed Temple and cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion as the World Cultural Heritage.

  Baotu Spring in Jinan

  Baotu Spring is the most prestigious one among the 72 popular springs with a history of 2,700 years.The character “GuanLan” carved on the stone stele in the GuanLan Pavilionat the western part of the water pond came from a famous caligrapher in Ming Dynasty(1368~1644),the character “DiYiQuan” was written by Wang Zhonglin, a famous calligrapher during Tongzhi period (1856-1875)in Qing Dynasty(1616~1911),and that of “Baotuquan” on the stone stele at the western side of the pavilion was the writing of Hu Zanzong, governor of Shandong in Ming Dynasty.There is a memorial in the park for Li Qingzhao, a well-known poetess in Song Dynasty (960~1279).

  Opening to the Outside World

  Shandong Province is an important coastal region opening to the outside world in eastern China. 8 municipalities of Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai, Zibo, Weifang, Rizhao, Jinan and Dongying have been listed in the Shandong Peninsula Economic Open Zone consecutively. There are 16 category-1 ports open to foreign vessels and airplanes in the province.

  Since the opening-up, the province has established 169 pairs of sisterhood relationship, including 35 sister provinces (states,regions), 118 sister municipalities and 16 sister counties from 50 countries of 5 continents.

  Shandong is the hometown for 500,000 overseas Chinese and foreign citizens of Chinese origin, whose dwelling places mainly are R. O. Korea, U.S.A, Japan, Russia, India, Singapore, Indonesia and some other countries and regions.

  Shandong is one of China’s most important provinces in foreign trade. The province has developed trade relations with over 180 countries and regions across the world. Its foreign trade volume in 2010 hit 188.951 billion US dollars in total, among which 84.7 billion US dollars are from import and 104.25 billion from export. Now the number of Shandong enterprises established abroad has reached 2386.

  In 2010 Shandong had actually utilized 9.17 billion US dollars of foreign investment while the gross paid-in value of foreign funds has reached 111.81 billion US dollars since reform and opening-up.

  Shandong Province has spared no efforts to improve investment environment and attract overseas investors. In 2010, 242 new big projects were approved in the province with overseas investment exceeding 30 million US dollars. At present, 211 Fortune Global 500 companies have come to Shandong for investment.
