  Economy

  Shandong is a big economic power in China. Its GDP value in 2010 totaled 3.94162 trillion RMB yuan, ranking the third across the nation and among which 1.87249 trillion RMB yuan were contributed by the Shandong Peninsula Blue Economic Zone, and 567.85 billion RMB yuan by the Yellow River Delta Efficient Ecological Economic Zone.

  Agriculture

  Shandong is powerful in agriculture and has the country’s highest agricultural output. In 2010, its grain output hit 43.357 million tons, cotton 724,000 tons, oil crops 3.422 million tons, meat products 7.047 million tons. In recent years Shandong Province has developed into the biggest “Vegetable Basket” of China and the total output of vegetables reached 90.307 million tons in 2010.

  Shandong is a renowned producer of various fruits with main products of apples, pears, peaches, apricots, dates, grapes and watermelons. In 2010, the total output of fruits reached 14.389 million tons.

  Forest coverage of the whole province is 24%. In 2010, afforestation area were newly accumulated by 3.077 million mu.

  In 2010, aquatic products in Shandong were 7.834 million tons.

  Industry

  In 2010, the added value generated from scale-above industries increased by 15% and main business revenue reached 8.9168 trillion RMB yuan.

  Crude oil 27.86 million tons

  Cement 147.492 million tons

  Electricity power 304.27 billion kwh

  Plate glass 60.849 million weight cases

  Steel 66.722 million tons

  Cloth 13.91 billion meters

  An industrial structure with energy, chemical industry, metallurgy, building materials, machinery, electronics, textile and foodstuff as mainstay, has formed on the whole. A number of leading enterprises and brand-name products have come forth.

  Life standard

  In 2010, the per capita disposable income of urban residents reached 19,946 RMB yuan; the per capita net income of farmers reached 6,990 RMB yuan. The people in the province, by and large, have been enjoying a moderately prosperous life.

  Science, Education, Culture & Public Health

  Science and Technology

  In 2010, the province won 36 national scientific and technological progress awards, 2,367 prominent scientific research achievements were made, and 80,900 applications for patent rights were filed. There are 37 academicians from the China Academy of Science and the Engineering Academy of China resident in Shandong. Shandong has 700 middle-aged and young experts with outstanding contributions, 100 more than before.

  Education

  The province has 133 regular institutions of higher education with 1.631 million enrolled students and among which 65,000 are postgraduates. The enrollment in 709 secondary vocational schools of the province is 1.132 million. There are 5.0107 million students in 3,645 middle schools. The number of pupils in 12,405 elementary schools is 6.2925 million.

  Culture

  Shandong, as an important birthplace of Chinese civilization, enjoys time-honored and splendid culture and arts. The province has over 30 local operas including Lv opera, Liuzi opera and Shandong Bangzi, among which Guzi Yangge, Jiaozhou Yangge and Haiyang Yangge are called “three major Yangges of Shandong”. Shandong has achieved another name as “Mountain of Books and Sea of Songs” for its sophisticated arts of story telling and ballad singing. Shandong is also well known domestically and internationally for its world-acclaimed acrobatics. In Shandong there are 111 museums, 150 public libraries, 9 state-level cultural industry demonstration bases, 71 provincial level cultural industry demonstration bases, and 1 national cultural industry demonstration park.

  There are 87 different newspapers, 260 magazines and periodicals officially endorsed. 11,837 kinds of books have been published. Dazhong Daily is a newspaper directly run by the provincial authorities with circulation exceeding 400,000.

  There are 92 radio stations covering 98.13% of the province’s total population, and 18 TV Stations covering 97.92% of the province’s total population. Shandong TV Station is one of the earliest Chinese domestic stations which broadcast its programs by satellite. This station is putting out programs 24 hours a day covering across whole China and more than 40 neighboring countries and regions.

  Sports

  Shandong boasts strong competence in sports area. It ranks top in China in many athletic sports, including track & field, gymnastics, table tennis, martial art, swimming, weight lifting, shooting, sailing, boat racing, kayak, basketball, football etc. In 2010, during the 16th Asian Games which were held in Guangzhou, 185 athletes of the province joined the national delegation and won 39 gold, 8 silver and 14 bronze medals, broke 1 Asian record, achieved best results in Asian Games history.

  Health care

  There are 16,000 medical institutions in Shandong Province, with 382,500 clinical beds and 440,800 personnel engaging in healthcare sector.
