“We are now in a critical period to comprehensively deepen reform; the maintenance and protection of cultural relics is also confronted with new development opportunities and real challenges”, Tong Mingkang, Deputy Director of State Administration of Cultural Heritage, said at the sixth National Cultural Relics Protection Project Meeting in Jinan City. He summarized the recent achievement in protecting cultural relics, pointed out the current problem and also lashed at some chaotic phenomena:

One: the cultural relics protection projects lack of third-party consultation and appraisal institution.

Two: the cultural heritage department becomes the safety island of “tons of uncles and aunts”.

Three: serious excessive maintenance leads to the vicious cycle of “maintenance, abandon, damage and re-maintenance”.

Four: lack of daily maintenance makes temples and buildings full of dust.

Five: there are also issues such as regional protectionism and embezzling and intercepting special funds.
