Liaocheng enjoys a long history and profound cultural connotation. In January 1994, it was approved as one of the third batch of national famous historical and cultural cities. Now it has a total of 362 culture relic protection units and more than 400 cultural relics, for instance, Guangyue Tower in the Ming Dynasty, Shan-Shan Guildhall in the Qing Dynasty, the Liaocheng section of the Grand Canal, etc.
Liaocheng municipal party committee and municipal government attach great importance to the protection and development of historical and cultural city, regarding it as a key strategic measure for the construction of ecological Liaocheng. Based on the rich cultural resources, Liaocheng comprehensively develops and promotes the canal culture, the Yellow River culture, E-jiao culture, Fanbai culture, etc, and has successfully built a large group of influential tourist projects including the ancient water city, the exhibition of canal culture and Yellow River forest park.
Taking full use of its rich cultural deposits, Liaocheng city will earnestly implement the two major projects of “famous cultural city” and “big tourist city” , striving to build Liaocheng as a cultural demonstration area by 2020.
