liaocheng city is located in the west of Shandong Province) in the area of north latitude 35 ° 47’ and 37 ° 02 ' , east longitude 115 °16’ and 116°32’,to the west sharing Zhangwei River with Handan City, Xingtai Prefecture of Hebei Province ,to the south along Jindi River and Yellow River neighboring with Henan Province and Jining City, Tai’an City as well as Jinan City of Shandong Province and to the north connecting with Dezhou City of Shandong Province.From east point of the city to west one, the distance is 114 kilometer,with 138 kilometer from south point to north one with total area of 8590 square kilometers covering 5.6% of total area of Shandong Province.
Evolution
The name of Liaocheng originated from Liaosheguo in ancient time.
The Counties and Cities-county jusrisdicted by Liaocheng changed many times.Liaocheng affiliated to Yanzhou during the period before the flood.During the period of Spring and autumn and Warring states , the territory of Liaocheng belonged to qi wei wei, jin, zhao respectively.The systems of prefectures and counties was carried out during the period of Qin Dynastry, Liaocheng was under the control of Dong Prefecture.In early time of West Han Dynastry, Liaocheng, Donge, Yanggu and Shenxian affiliated to Dong Prefectur of Yanzhou, Wei Prefecture of Jizhou and Pingyuan Prefecture of Qingzhou respectively.During the time of Dong Han Dynasty, Liaocheng belonged to Pingyuan Prefecture,Jibei of Yanzhou and Yangping Prefecture of Sizhou respectively.In the time of Three Kingdoms, the total area of Liaocheng was under control of Wei Kingdom.In Jin Dynasty, Liaocheng affiliated to Pingyuan Prefecture of Jizhou, Yangping Prefecture of Sizhou as well as Jibei and Dongping respectively. In Hou Wei Dynasty, Liaocheng belonged to Pingyuan Prefecture of JiZhou, Yangping Prefecture of Sizhou, Jibei Prefecture of Jizhou and Nanqinghe Prefecture of Jizhou respectively.During the time of Qi and Zhou Dynasty, Liaocheng was under the control of Pingyuan Prefecture, Jibei Prefecture of Jibei and Yangping Prefecture of Sizhou respectively.In the early Sui Dynasty, Liaocheng belonged to Wuyang Prefecture of Weizhou, Qinghe Prefecture of Beizhou, Jibei Prefecture of Jizhou and Jibei Prefecture of Yanzhou respectively.In Tang Dynasty, Liaocheng was under the control of Boping Prefecture of Bozhou, Qinghe Prefecture of Beizhou, Wei Prefecture of Weizhou in Hebei and Jiyang Prefecture, Dongping Prefecture of Yunzhou in Heinan respectively.In early Song Dynasty, Liaocheng affiliated to Boping Prefecture of Bozhou, Wei Prefecture of Damingfu in East Hebei and Dongping Prefecture of Dongpingfu in West Jingdong respectively. During Liao,Jing Dynasty, Liaocheng was under the control of Bozhou, Dongpingfu of Dongping Prefecture in West Shandong, Damingfu and Enzhou in Daming respectivelyl.In Yuan Dynasty, Liaocheng belonged to Zhongguanfu,Guanzhou, Gaotangzhou and Puzhou of Dongchang as well as Dongping respectively.In Ming Dynasty, Liaocheng was under the control of Dongchangfu in Shandong and Dongpingzhou of Yanzhou respectively.In Qing Dynasty, Liaocheng affiliated to Dongchangfu, Yangzhoufu, Taianfu and Zhilizhou respectively.In 1912, the area was controlled by Jixi governing Liaocheng and in 1914 was controlled by Donglin. In 1928,all the counties in Liaocheng was directly governed by Shandong Province.In 1936, 13 counties in northwest Shandong belonged to No.6 Area of Shandong and Linqing, Gaotang belonged to No.4 Area.In April of 1940, Liaocheng was under the control of Office of Executive Director of Western Shandong.In June of 1941, Northern Bureau of Central Committee of Chinese Communist Part merged Office of Executive Director of Western Shandong and Office of Executive Director of Hebei,Shandong and Henan into Office of Executive Director of Hebei,Shandong and Henan administing 7 Commissioner’s Offices. Liaocheng was under the control of No.2,No.3,No.6 and No.8 Commissioner’s Offices respectively. Before the foundation of the People’s Republic of China , the name of Commissioner Office changed many times.On Agust 20 of 1949, Commissioner Office of Executive Supervision of Liaocheng was founded belonging to Pingyuan Province.Guantao, Linqing and County-level Linqing Township belonged to Commissioner Office of Executive Supervision of Handan of Hebei Province.In November of 1952, Pingyuan Province was cancelled and then Commissioner Office of Executive Supervision of Liaocheng belonged to Shandong Province In March of 1967, Commissioner Office of Executive Supervision of Liaocheng was renamed Revolutionary Committee of Liaocheng Prefecture.In July of 1978, Revolutionary Committee of Liaocheng Prefecture was renamed Executive Office of Liaocheng Prefecture.In August of 1997, the State of Council approved to cancel Liaocheng Prefecture and County-level Liaocheng City and established Liaocheng City and Dongchangfu District of Liaocheng City respectively.

There are 43 ethnic minorities in Liaocheng with population of 67000. Liaocheng is a important city with residents of many ethnic minorities in Shandong Province. The population of ethnic minorites of Liaocheng ranks the fourth in Shandong living in 46 towns(subdistrict office) and 150 villages(residential committee). There are four counties(county-level city and district) with more than 10000 persons of ethnic minority and one Hui town and 11 towns(subdistrict office) with more than 2000 persons of ethnic minority and 43 villages of ethnic minority named by related government.The city has 24 primary or middle schools of ethnic minority including 3 middle schools and 21 primary schools of ethnic minority with students of 8578.
