  Overview of Districts & Cities

  Shinan District

  Shinan District, one of the central urban areas, is Qingdao City’s administrative, tourist, cultural, commercial, financial and technological center, covering an area of 30 square kilometers with 630,000 people. To achieve the goal of accelerating the construction of the best district of a modern international city, Shinan District makes efforts to build six carrier functional zones including the Qingdao international shipping service zone, the century-old street commercial and tourist zone, the European taste cultural and recreational zone, the core international financial and commercial zone, the Olympic sailing cultural and tourist zone and the international animation and game industry to upgrade the industrial structure from the traditional structure to a modern one and from the low-end structure to a high-end one.

  Shibei District

  Shibei District, one of the central urban areas, is China’s specialty urban district with the largest number of specialty streets, covering an area of 28.6 square kilometers with 560,000 people. Shibei District has actively implemented the strategy of prospering the district through commerce, science, technology, education and culture and building up the district through talents, and has accelerated the construction of eight industrial bases including the Xiaogang Bay blue economy industrial base, the Julinshan outsourcing industrial base, the Qingdao demonstrative base of the advertisement industry, the Qingdao movie and television recording and broadcasting base, the Qingdao tourism and medical care base, the Qingdao guarantee information base, the Shandong tourist product concentration and distribution base and the Qingdao health industrial base to realize coordinated development and common prosperity of the new service industry and the traditional service industry.

  Sifang District

  Sifang District in the central urban area is the origin of Qingdao’s modern industry, covering an area of 34.6 square kilometers with 440,000 people. Sticking to the principle of “function reengineering, vitality injection, better environment and quality improvement”, Sifang District has come up with the goal of “making every effort to build the district into a new coastal district suitable for commerce, residence and business startup”. The focus will be placed on the construction of five blocks, including Happy Coastal City, Qingdao New Urban Center, Excellent Sifang Creative Park, Qingdao Science and Technology Park and Architectural Creative Industry Park. It will endeavor to build landmark buildings, landscapes and competitive specialty industries.

  Licang District

  Licang District in the northern urban area covering an area of 98 square kilometers with 370,000 people has broad development space and great development potential. Focusing on the orientation of “a hub around the bay and ecological commercial center”, Licang District implements the strategic layout of “one pole, two axes, three zones and four belts”, and builds a core commercial zone on the eastern shore of Jiaozhou Bay in the west, Qingdao’s northern commodity trade center in the middle and Qingdao’s central residential zone in the east. The main park of the 2014 World Horticultural Exposition is in the district.

  Chengyang District

  Chengyang District in the northern urban area is an urban-rural fringe area covering a total area of 553.2 square kilometers with more than 700,000 people. Chengyang District makes efforts to develop the four industrial blocks, namely the downtown area, the export processing zone, the airport industrial zone and the new material industrial zone, and to foster the six leading industries – new materials, electronic information, petrochemical, equipment manufacturing, textiles and garments and biological medicines and foods. It has ranked first among Shandong’s counties, cities and districts in terms of exports for years.

  Laoshan District

  Laoshan District is a new modern urban district, garden-like and ecological, rising rapidly in the east. It has an area of 389 square kilometers, a coastline of 103 kilometers and more than 300,000 people. Laoshan District is home to three national policy-related areas, namely Qingdao Hi-tech Industrial Park, Laoshan National Scenic Resort and Shilaoren National Tourist and Recreation Zone, makes efforts to foster the four hi-tech industries, namely household electric appliances, oceanic biological pharmaceuticals, software and new materials, and strives to build a core zone for Qingdao hi-tech industries, an international tourism and resort zone and a concentration area for modern service industry.

  Jimo City

  Jimo City is a sub-center city of the half-an-hour economic rim centering on Qingdao. As early as in the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States Periods, Jimo was already the commercial hub in Qi State. It was turned into a city in the Sui Dynasty, creating a history of more than 1,400 years. With an area of 1,727 square kilometers, Jimo City has 18 towns, five sub-districts, one provincial-level economic development zone, one provincial tourism and resort zone, and one provincial-level hi-tech industrial development zone. The city also has a built-up area of 50 square kilometers, a total of 1.14 million people including 750,000 rural residents, a sea area of 2,517 square kilometers and a coastline of 183 kilometers, 1% of the country’s total. Jimo is “China’s famous knitwear city”. Jimo Garment Market is the largest single garment wholesale market in China, and Aoshan Bay has displayed its new charms for recreation and resort. According to the thought of focusing on the clusters of leading industries, the upgrade of traditional industries, the scale of new industries and the characteristics of modern service industries, Jimo City concentrates on the six industrial clusters of knitting garment and clothing, electronics and electronic fittings, shipbuilding and shipbuilding fittings, foods and beverages, market commodity trade and tourism.

  Jiaozhou City

  Jiaozhou City is on the shore of Jiaozhou Bay. During the Tang and Song dynasties, Jiaozhou was one of the five major trading ports in China and the only one north of the Yangtze River. It has 13 towns, five sub-districts, a total area of 1,210 square kilometers, a built-up area of 38 square kilometers, and a total of 850,000 people including 600,000 rural residents.   Jiaonan City

  Jiaonan City is located on Qingdao’s western coast. The historical site Langya Terrace has been designated as a key national tourist resort and a provincial tourist and recreation zone. The Dongjiakou Port has become one of the three new port areas of the Qingdao Port. It has six sub-districts, 11 towns, a total area of 1,870 square kilometers, a built-up area of 53 square kilometers, a total of 860,000 people including 680,000 rural residents and a coastline of 131 kilometers. Jiaonan City quickens the pace of implementing the strategy of “making the city prosperous through ports”, carries out the planning and construction of the ten urban complexes of industry, tourism, commerce, logistics, eastern cities, culture and sports, modern agriculture, public services, scientific and industrial service guarantee for national defense, and incubation for scientific, educational and innovative industries, and makes efforts to foster the traditional competitive industries of machine manufacturing, foods and medicines, household electric and electronic appliances, rubber and tires, etc. as well as the new industries of environment-friendly energy equipment, electronic information, ship and ocean engineering, etc.

  Pingdu City

  Pingdu City is located in the northwest of Qingdao. Its outputs of grain, cotton, edible oil, meat and fruit all come atop the county-level cities in China. Pingdu City, the largest county-level city in Shandong Province, has 26 towns, four sub-districts, one provincial economic development zone, a total area of 3,166 square kilometers, a built-up area of 41 square kilometers and a total of 1.38 million people including 940,000 rural residents. Focusing on building a central processing and manufacturing city on Shandong Peninsula, a modern garden-like habitable city and a specialty cultural city in east Shandong, Pingdu City quickens the pace of promoting new industrialization, new urbanization, the modernization of the agriculture and the modernization of the service industry, and makes efforts to build the four industrial clusters of machinery parts, food processing, household electric and electronic appliances and specialty chemicals.

  Laixi City

  Located in the northeast of Qingdao, Laixi City is surrounded by four cities opening to the outside world, namely Qingdao, Weihai, Yantai and Weifang. Chanzhi reservoir (Laixi Lake), the largest reservoir in east Shandong with a storage capacity of 402 million cubic meters, is in the northern urban area. It has 11 towns, five sub-districts, one economic development zone, a total area of 1,522 square kilometers, a built-up area of 30 square kilometers and a total of 750,000 people including 560,000 rural residents. Laixi City is a national top city in terms of food industry and a national comprehensive demonstration city for standardized production of agricultural products. The city has initially formed six major industrial chains for agricultural product processing: cow and milk product processing, chicken and chicken meat processing, pig and pork product processing, vegetable and vegetable product processing, fruit and fruit product processing, and peanut and peanut product processing. Laixi City sticks to the strategy of “constructing the city by developing its industries and making the city prosperous and strong by developing its industries”, quickens the pace of promoting the new industrialization process, and makes efforts to foster the six industrial clusters of food processing, textile and garment, electronic information, machine-building, minerals and building materials, and rubber and chemicals.
