The first International Martial Arts Competition will take place in Tai'an city from April 18 to 21, hosting more than 200 matches featuring wushu or other martial arts from home and abroad.

The competition has three major categories, including traditional Chinese boxing, free combat or sanda and tai chi. Attracted by Taishan's wushu, nearly 2,000 fighters from around the world will join the competition. According to a news release conference on April 15, more than 30 famous Chinese players will join the competition, most of whom are directors of various kung fu schools.

The competition will also attract overseas fans. About 200 international players from 20 countries and districts will attend. The director of Saint Petersburg's sports bureau will lead more than 30 players to attend the competition.

Citizens of Tai'an can watch the competitions and martial arts performances for free. Hosted by the Shandong Sports Bureau, Shandong Tourism Bureau and the Tai'an City People's Government, the competition will also welcome masters of Chinese kung fu to host lectures and give guidance to players and amateurs.

"There are many features of the competition that will attract wushu fans and tourists," says Li Dafeng, deputy director of the Shandong Wushu Institution of the Shandong Sports Bureau. "Audiences can experience the ancient culture of Taishan, witness performances by real masters and enjoy the ceremonies."
